Rev. Dr. James Simmons
Rev. Dr. James Simmons is the oldest son of the late James M. Simmons and Alice Mattocks Simmons. He was born and raised in Silverdale, North Carolina.
He received his high school diploma in 1967 from Swansboro High School, Swansboro, North Carolina. Upon graduation, he attended Kittrell Jr. College, Kittrell, North Carolina. He transferred after one year to Fayetteville State University. He graduated in 1971 from Fayetteville State University with a BS Degree in History and Political Science.
After graduating from Fayetteville State University, he went on to pursued graduate studies at the University of Illinois Jane Adams School of Social Work. He graduated from the University of Illinois in 1974 with a Masters in Social Work. He subsequently attended the Academy of Health Science, Fort Sam in Houston, Texas, where he received a Masters in Hospital Administration.
He was licensed to preach the Word of God in 1991 and was ordained Elder in the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church May, 1997. He obtained a Masters of Divinity from Lutheran Theological Seminary 1998 and a Doctorate of Ministry from Covington Theological Seminary in 2002.
He is currently the Pastor of Mt. Tabor AME Zion Church in Avondale, PA. Prior to being assigned to Mt. Tabor AME Zion Church, Rev. Dr. Simmons previously served as senior pastor at St. James AME Zion Church (4 years) and Alleyne Memorial AME Zion Church (5 years) both located in Philadelphia, PA. In Addition he was assigned as Pastor of Genesis AME Zion Church, Coatesville, PA for one year.
Rev. Dr. James Simmons retired from the Department of Veterans Affairs, Coatesville Medical Center, where he served as a Clinical Social Worker for 35 years. He is also a retired Lt. Colonel from the US Army reserves, where he committed 27 years of service.
He is married to Sandra Faye Powell- Simmons and is the father of two children; Ebonnie L. Vasquez (Francisco) and the late James Simmons III( Jana) They have one grandchild , Essence Najai Tonet Hall.
